Industrial Engineering Students Honored
for Best Technical Paper at IIE Regional Conference

Three students from the College of Engineering were recently awarded best technical paper at the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) western regional student conference.

Industrial Engineering seniors Manny Cortez, Paula Mitchell and Aung Zeya were honored for their paper, "Quality Improvement at Mitchell Laboratory," at the 2005 Region 7 IIE Conference, March 4-6, at the University of Southern California.

"Our students continually prove their superior learning ability by receiving the highest awards in regional and national competitions," says Kamran Abedini, Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering professor and adviser of Cal Poly Pomona's IIE chapter. "Our students make me proud to be their adviser."

Other universities participating in the competition were USC, the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and the University of Texas at El Paso. Cal Poly Pomona's IIE students will travel to Atlanta in May for the IIE National Technical Paper Competition.

Founded in 1948, IIE is an international organization that promotes various areas of the industrial engineering field by publishing magazines and books, holding conferences and supporting students. The Cal Poly Pomona student chapter organizes social and professional activities that encourage students to network within the department, with members of industry and with other universities. Through these opportunities, students are able to develop skills in communication, leadership, teamwork and planning.
